More about Tim Wakefield
- Wakefield was original drafted as an infielder by the Pirates but, after a few years in the minors, realized that he would not turn pro unless he became a pitcher. So he learned how to throw the knuckleball and is the only active pitcher in the majors who has that as his number one pitch.
- As a rookie in 1992, he went 8-1 and earned two complete-game wins for Pittsburgh in the seven-game National League Championship Series loss to the Atlanta Braves.
- Wakefield signed with Boston as a free agent before the 1995 season and went 16-8 in 27 starts that season, posting an ERA of just 2.95 and helping to lead the Red Sox to an American League East Division title for the first time in five seasons.
- In 1998, he won 17 games as a starter, a career high, but then-manager Jimy Williams decided after that season to move Wakefield to the bullpen. He then earned 15 saves in 1999, filling in for an injured Tom Gordon. He also averaged a dozen starts each season between 1999 and 2001.
- Through the end of the 2007 season, Wakefield has won 154 games in a Boston uniform, putting him third all-time among Red Sox career leaders behind Roger Clemens and Cy Young, who each won 192 games. Wakefield is also second in appearances for Boston with 474 games, second in games started with 337, third in innings pitched with 2400-2/3, and third in strikeouts with 1680.
Memorable Moments for Tim Wakefield
- 27 April 1995 - Boston signs free agent Tim Wakefield after the pitcher's release from the Pittsburgh Pirates.
- 16 October 2003 - New York takes Game Seven and the American League pennant with a 6-5, 11-inning win over Boston at Yankee Stadium. Up 5-2 with one out in the eighth, manager Grady Little leaves what appears to be an exhausted Pedro Martinez on the mound despite the bullpen having given up just two runs in the series. The Yankees score three runs on four straight hits to tie the score and win in the bottom of the 11th when Aaron Boone hits the first pitch he sees from Tim Wakefield into the left field bleachers to send New York to the World Series.
- 8 August 2004 - Despite allowing six home runs, Tim Wakefield and the Red Sox win 11-9 over the Tigers in Detroit. Wakefield is one of only six pitchers in modern baseball history to yield six home runs in one game.
- 11 April 2005 - Boston raises a World Series championship banner at Fenway Park for the first time since 1919 and the team goes on to beat the Yankees 9-2. Tim Wakefield goes seven innings to earn the win and battery mate Doug Mirabelli hits a home run in the victory.
