More about Josh Beckett

  • Picked second in the first round of the 1999 amateur draft, Beckett quickly rose through the farm system and was a September call-up in 2001, going 2-2 in four starts with a 1.50 ERA.
  • Beckett was an integral part of the 2003 Florida Marlins club that won an improbable World Series title against the New York Yankees. Up three games to two and given the ball for Game Six, the young ace shut out the Bronx Bombers on five hits and earned series MVP honors.
  • In his first season with Boston (2006), Beckett won a career-high 16 games and eclisped the 200-inning mark for the first time in his career, though he also allowed 36 home runs, tied for second among major league pitchers in 2006.
  • In 2007, Beckett won his first seven starts and his first nine decisions; he ended the season with a record of 20-7 as a starter to became the Major's first 20-game winner in two years and the first for Boston since teammate Curt Schilling won 21 in 2004. He also was the winning pitcher in the 2007 All-Star Game in San Francisco thanks to two innings of scoreless relief.
  • In his first post-season with Boston, Beckett was solid, pitching a complete-game shutout in Game One of the ALDS versus the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and earning ALCS MVP honors with two wins in two starts against the Cleveland Indians. He also won Game One of the World Series versus the Colorado Rockies to finish the post-season with a 4-0 record, a 1.20 ERA, and 35 strikeouts with just two walks allowed.

Memorable Moments for Josh Beckett

  • 20 May 2006 - Starter Josh Beckett rips a drive into the left-center seats at Citizens Bank Park for his second career homer in the seventh inning to give the Red Sox a 5-1 lead over Philadelphia. It's the first home run hit by a Boston pitcher since Marty Pattin on 26 September 1972. The Red Sox eventually win 8-4 over the Phillies.
  • 28 June 2006 - Former Red Sox ace Pedro Martinez gives up eight runs on seven hits and two walks in three innings of work as Boston thumps the visiting New York Mets, 10-2. In contrast, Josh Beckett earns his tenth win, going 7-2/3 innings at allowing just two runs on five hits and one walk.
  • 19 July 2006 - Josh Beckett and Jonathan Papelbon combine for Boston's second consecutive 1-0 shutout over Kansas City, the first time since 1916 that the Red Sox had won back-to-back 1-0 wins at Fenway Park. Rookie pitcher Jon Lester had allowed just one hit in eight innings of work the previous day against the Royals and Papelbon had worked a perfect ninth.

  • 21 October 2007 - Boston completes a comeback from a 3-1 American League Champion Series deficit with an 11-2 win over Cleveland, winning the AL pennant in seven games for the second time in four years. Pitcher Josh Beckett, who wins Games One and Five, is named series MVP.
