More about Mike Timlin

  • Prior to winning a championship with Boston in 2004, Timlin had previously earned rings playing for the 1992 and 1993 Toronto Blue Jays. In the 1992 series against Atlanta, he was called out in the bottom of the eleventh inning of Game Six with the score 4-3 and John Smotlz standing 90 feet away from tying the game. Timlin was able to induce a groundout by Otis Nixon to collect the save and give the Blues Jays their first championship in team history.
  • In 1996, converted to a full-time closer by Toronto, Timlin collected 31 saves, a personal best. For the Blue Jays, he is fifth all-time in club history in that category with 52 and third all-time with 175 games finished.
  • Timlin led Boston in 2004 with 76 appearances, just the 13th time in club history that a player made more that 70 appearances in a single season. The year before that, he made 72 appearances, becoming just the third pitcher in team history to record back-to-back seasons with 70 appearances or more. He also joined Keith Foulke (72) and Alan Embree (71) as the only trio of Red Sox teammates to make at least 70 appearances in a season.
  • In 2005, he set a Red Sox record by making 81 appearances, besting Greg Harris's record of 80 appearances set in 1993. He also earned 13 saves after being tapped as the team's closer late in the season following an injury to Keith Foulke and the movement of Curt Schilling back into the rotation.
  • In 2007, Timlin made 50 appearances to finish the season with a career total of 1,011, which places him third among active players and tenth overall all-time in Major League Baseball. Only 13 pitchers in baseball history have made at least 1,000 career appearances.
  • Timlin prides himself in being a workhorse and, after beginning his career with Boston in 2003, he has every one of his appearances count for more than just a sheet of statistics. He has pledged a $500 donation for every appearance that he made in a Red Sox uniform to raise money for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS, or Lou Gehrig's disease) research after his mother passed away from the disease in early 2002, only a year after being diagnosed.
