More about Mike Lowell

  • Lowell was originally drafted and signed by the New York Yankees in 1995; he was then traded to the Florida Marlins in February of 1999. Shortly after that trade, a routine physical discovered that he had testicular cancer; after undergoing successful surgery, he made his rookie debut in May of 1999 and finished the season with a .253 average, 12 home runs, and 47 RBI. Major League Baseball recognized this with the 1999 Tony Conigliaro award.
  • His 2003 season cut short due to a broken hand suffered when he was hit by a pitch in late August, he still managed to finish with 32 home runs and 105 RBI. In 2004, he finished with a career high batting average of .293.
  • In 2005, Lowell's numbers dropped considerably, hitting just .236 with eight home runs, but his glove work at third base earned him Gold Glove honors for that position.
  • While enjoying a rebirth in Boston in 2006, Lowell also made just six errors at third base in 153 games and went a stretch of 70 games between 24 May and 18 August in which he did not make an error in the field. For his efforts, he was recognized by the fans with the selection as the Defensive Player of the Year by Major League Baseball's This Year In Baseball Awards.
  • In 2007, Lowell finished seventh in the American League in batting average (.324) and fifth in RBI (120), both career-best marks, while also hitting 21 home runs. He also finished high amongst Red Sox leaders in several categories.
  • In the 2007 post-season, Lowell batted .353 and finished with two home runs, 15 RBI, and a slugging percentage of .610. He posted a hit in all but two of Boston's 14 post-season contests and was named World Series MVP, the second Red Sox player ever to receive that honor.
