4 January 2005 - Former Boston third baseman Wade Boggs is elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame.
23 March 2005 - Red Sox ownership announces that the team will remain in Fenway Park for the immediate future, ending any speculation of the team building a new ballpark in Boston. The only request made by the team is for the city to consider improvements to the surrounding neighborhood as the club promises to continue to upgrade the park to meet modern standards.
11 April 2005 - Boston raises a World Series championship banner at Fenway Park for the first time since 1919 and the team goes on to beat the Yankees 9-2. Tim Wakefield goes seven innings to earn the win and battery mate Doug Mirabelli hits a home run in the victory.
11 May 2005 - One day after teammate Kevin Millar wins the game for Boston with a walk-off, two-run home run for a 3-2 Red Sox win over the Athletics, Jason Varitek victimizes Oakland reliever Octavio Dotel with a two-run walk-off home run of his own as the Red Sox win 7-6.
2 June 2005 - David Ortiz takes Orioles closer B.J. Ryan deep to center field in the ninth inning at Fenway Park to give Boston a walk-off 6-4 win.
5 July 2005 - Manny Ramirez hits the 20th grand slam of his career in a 7-4 Boston win, putting him second behind Lou Gehrig on the career list.
15 July 2005 - Outfielders Johnny Damon and Manny Ramirez each get four hits for the Red Sox in Boston's 17-1 rout of New York at Fenway Park.
17 July 2005 - Johnny Damon extends his hitting streak to 29 games in a 5-3 loss to the Yankees at Fenway Park.
2 October 2005 - One day after the Yankees clinch the division title, Boston wins 10-1 over New York to earn a wild card berth. Although the teams finished with identical 95-67 records, the Yankees had won the season series, ten games to nine.
7 October 2005 - Boston is swept from the playoffs by Chicago as the Red Sox lose 5-3 at Fenway Park in Game Three of the division series. The White Sox go on to win the World Series for the first time in 88 years and lose just one game in the 2005 postseason.
31 October 2005 - General manager Theo Epstein announces his resignation after he and ownership fail to agree to a new contract; however, Epstein would return to his role three months and replace Ben Cherington and Jed Hoyer, who had been named as co-general managers in December.
14 November 2005 - Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez wins the American League MVP award as Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz finishes a close second in the balloting.
20 December 2005 - Boston's rivalry with New York is further fueled as free agent Johnny Damon spurns an offer from the Red Sox and signs a four-year, $52 million contract with the Yankees.
