13 February 2002 - Future Hall of Fame outfielder Rickey Henderson signs a minor-league contract with the Boston Red Sox. The 43-year-old "Man of Steal" spends one season with Boston and bats .223 in 72 games with the club.
28 February 2002 - Dan Duquette, after eight seasons as general manager, is fired less than a day after new ownership takes control of the Red Sox.
11 March 2002 - Less than a month before the season is set to begin, the Red Sox replace interim coach Mike Cubbage with Grady Little.
27 April 2002 - Derek Lowe pitches the first no-hitter at Fenway Park in 37 years, allowing just a leadoff walk in the third inning, as the Red Sox trounced the Devil Rays, 10-0.
18 May 2002 - Pedro Martinez strikes out the side on nine pitches in the first inning of a 4-1 Red Sox win over the Mariners at Fenway Park.
5 July 2002 - Red Sox legend Ted Williams passes away at the age of eighty-three in Inverness, Florida.
23 July 2002 - Celebrating his 29th birthday, Red Sox shortstop Nomar Garciaparra hits three home in the span of two innings, as Boston destroys the visiting Tampa Bay Devil Rays, 22-4. Garciaparra becomes the first player to hit three home runs over two consecutive innings and also ties a record with five home runs in consecutive ball games.
24 August 2002 - Flying out to center field in the bottom of the sixth inning, Red Sox outfielder Manny Ramirez ends a streak of 14 consecutive at-bats in which he reaches base, which includes nine hits and five walks. Former Boston outfielder Ted Williams holds the major league record with 16.
14 September 2002 - Red Sox pitcher Derek Lowe collects win number 20 with a 6-4 Boston triumph over Baltimore; Lowe is the first pitcher to record his first twenty-win season after saving 40 or more games in a previous season.
22 September 2002 - With Pedro Martinez notching win number 20, he and Derek Lowe become the first pair of Red Sox pitchers to win 20 or more games in a single season since 1949.
25 November 2002 - Having grown up in the shadows of Fenway Park in Brookline, MA, twenty-eight-year-old Theo Epstein becomes the youngest general manager in Major League Baseball history when the Red Sox select him to replace interim GM Mike Port.
