11 January 2001 - Free agent pitcher David Cone, after five seasons with the New York Yankees, signs a one-year deal with the Red Sox. Cone goes 9-7 with Boston in 2001 and is the last pitcher to face Cal Ripken, Jr. in his Hall of Fame career.
4 April 2001 - Hideo Nomo pitches a no-hitter in his first start with the Red Sox as Boston wins 2-0 over Baltimore at Camden Yards. It's Nomo's second career no-hitter and marks the first thrown by a Red Sox pitcher since Dave Morehead in 1965.
6 April 2001 - The first pitch to Manny Ramirez at Fenway Park ends up leaving the yard as Boston wins the home opener 11-4 over Tampa Bay.
2 June 2001 - Manny Ramirez hits a towering home run into the fifth deck at SkyDome estimated at 491 feet; Boston eventually wins 2-1 over Toronto as Carl Everett homers in the ninth inning for the only other Red Sox run.
5 June 2001 - Rookie Shea Hillenbrand ends an 18-inning marathon at Fenway Park with a home run as the winning run crosses the plate at 12:58 AM in a 4-3 win over Detroit.
6 August 2001 - Scott Hatteberg first hits into a triple play, then hits a grand slam in his next at-bat as Boston wins 10-7 over Texas at Fenway Park. Hatteberg is the first player ever to do both in the same game.
16 August 2001 - Jimy Williams is fired as Red Sox manager and replaced by pitching coach Joe Kerrigan.
20 December 2001 - A group led by John Henry, Tom Werner, and Larry Lucchino purchase the Red Sox from the Jean R. Yawkey Trust for $660 million.
21 December 2001 - Free agent outfielder Johnny Damon leaves Oakland after one season and signs a four-year deal with Boston, one of Dan Duquette's last major signing.
