1 April 1998 - Pitcher Pedro Martinez makes his debut with Boston and strikes out 11 while allowing just three hits in seven shutout innings; the Red Sox go on to win 2-0 in Oakland against the Athletics.

12 April 1998 - In his Fenway Park debut, Pedro Martinez strikes out 12 and yields just two hits over eight innings as Boston blanks Seattle 5-0.

18 July 1998 - With two out in the fourth inning at Tiger Stadium, Boston scores seven runs on four home runs to tie a club record as the Red Sox go on to defeat the Tigers 9-4.

17 September 1998 - 43-year-old reliever Dennis Eckersley becomes the oldest Red Sox player to earn a win as Boston wins in 10 innings, 3-2 over Baltimore.

24 September 1998 - The Red Sox reach the playoffs by clinching the American League wild card with a 9-6 win over the Orioles at Fenway Park.

26 September 1998 - Dennis Eckersley makes his 1,071st and final major league appearance to breaks Hoyt Wilhelm's record for most career appearances as a pitcher.

27 September 1998 - Closer Tom Gordon sets a team record by recording his 46th save of the season in Boston's 6-4 win over Baltimore on the final day of the regular season; the former starter also notched his 43rd consecutive save in the process.

29 September 1998 - Boston breaks a stretch of 13 consecutive playoff loses as the Red Sox thump the Indians 11-3 in Cleveland behind the pitching of Pedro Martinez and seven RBI from Mo Vaughn.

3 October 1998 - Tom Gordon blows his first save since 14 April, allowing Cleveland's only two runs in the eighth inning, as the Indians win 2-1 at Fenway Park and clinch the division series over the Red Sox.

25 November 1998 - Mo Vaughn signs a free agent contract with the Anaheim Angels.
