2 January 1992 - Left-handed pitcher Frank Viola, the 1987 World Series MVP and 1988 American League Cy Young Award winner, signs with the Red Sox as a free agent. "Sweet Music" posts a record of 25-21 in three seasons with Boston, but his third is cut short in 1994 by Tommy John surgery due to an arm injury.

26 February 1992 - Owner Jean Yawkey, widow of Tom Yawkey, passes away at the age of 83, as ownership passes to a trust managed by John Harrington, who continues as club president.

12 April 1992 - Matt Young goes eight innings without allowing a hit but loses 2-1 to the Indians in Cleveland; Roger Clemens then shuts out the Tribe on two hits in the second half of a doubleheader as Boston wins 3-0. The two hits are the fewest allowed by a team in a doubleheader in major league history.

17 May 1992 - Wade Boggs collects his 2,000th career hit in a 3-1 loss to the Angels at Fenway Park.

15 June 1992 - Boston wins 1-0 over New York at Fenway Park as Jeff Reardon collects his 342nd career save, breaking the record held by Rollie Fingers. Right fielder Phil Plantier homers in the fifth for the game's only run.

10 July 1992 - Bob Zupcic hits a grand slam, his second in ten days, as Boston wins 6-5. Zupcic and Ellis Burks are the only two players in major league history to collect two grand slams in their rookie seasons.

7 September 1992 - Future Hall of Fame pitchers Roger Clemens and Nolan Ryan go head-to-head in Arlington as Boston gets the better of Texas, 3-0. Both pitchers threw seven scoreless innings before the Sox scored two in the eighth.

15 December 1992 - Wade Boggs, after eleven season in Boston, signs a free agent deal with the Yankees.
