10 April 1989 - Boston wins its home opener 5-2 as new first baseman Nick Esasky hits a home run in his Fenway Park debut.

4 June 1989 - The Red Sox blow a ten-run lead and lose 13-11 in extra innings to the Blue Jays at Fenway Park, the biggest blown lead in franchise history.

5 June 1989 - Mo Vaughn is the second Boston pick in the first round of the 1989 amateur draft; the Red Sox also draft Jeff Bagwell in the fourth round.

6 August 1989 - The Red Sox retire Carl Yastrzemski's number eight and Boston follows the pre-game ceremonies with a 6-2 win over Cleveland.

25 September 1989 - In Boston's 5-4 win over New York, Wade Boggs becomes the only player in modern baseball history to record seven consecutive 200-hit seasons.
