21 May 1988 - Boston retires former second baseman Bobby Doerr's number one before the Red Sox go out and defeat the Angels 8-4 at Fenway Park.

14 July 1988 - With Boston nine games out of first place at 43-42, the Red Sox fire manager John McNamara and replace him with third base coach and Walpole, MA native Joe Morgan.

25 July 1988 - Boston wins its 12th straight game under new manager Joe Morgan, beating Texas 2-0 in Arlington moving to within 1-1/2 games of first-place New York.

29 July 1988 - Playing both ends of a doubleheader, Jody Reed collects seven hits in nine at-bats as Boston sweeps Milwaukee at Fenway Park.

13 August 1988 - The Red Sox win their 24th straight game at Fenway Park, the longest such streak in American League history; Boston had not lost at home since 24 June.

14 September 1988 - Mike Greenwell hits for the cycle in Baltimore as the Red Sox win 4-3 over the Orioles.

30 September 1988 - Despite losing 4-2 in Cleveland to the Indians, the Red Sox win the American League East division as New York and Milwaukee both lose as well.

9 October 1988 - Oakland wins the American League pennant with a 4-1 win over Boston as the Athletics sweep the Red Sox in the ALCS, 4-0.
