Notable Moments from 1975
8 April 1975 - Back in a baseball uniform for the first time in nearly four years, Tony Conigliaro gets a warm welcome from the Fenway faithful and goes 1-for-4 as the DH in Boston's 5-2 Opening Day win versus Milwaukee. It also marks Hammerin' Hank Aaron's American League debut.
18 June 1975 - Fred Lynn drives in ten runs with three home runs, a triple, and a single in a 15-1 blowout of Detroit at Tiger Stadium. The triple missed being a home run by three feet. The 10 RBI ties a franchise record and the 16 total bases ties an American League record.
21 August 1975 - Tony Conigliaro's playing days come to an end as he retires from baseball for good.
16 September 1975 - Red Sox pitcher Luis Tiant and Orioles pitcher Jim Palmer duel at Fenway Park and Boston comes out on top, 2-0, on solo home runs by Carlton Fisk and Rico Petrocelli. The win gives the Sox a 5-1/2 game cushion in the American League East, all but locking up the division.
27 September 1975 - Boston wins its first American League East title despite a 5-2 loss to Cleveland at home when Baltimore loses on the road to New York.
7 October 1975 - The Red Sox wrap up the pennant with a 5-3 win over the Athletics in Oakland, winning the best-of-five ALCS three games to none.
21 October 1975 - Thanks to Bernie Carbo's three-run, pinch-hit home run in the late innings and Carlton Fisk's extra-inning long ball off the left field foul pole at Fenway Park, Boston wins a dramatic Game Six against Cincinnati, 6-5 in 12 innings.
22 October 1975 - Despite holding a 3-0 lead early, Boston loses the seventh game of the 1975 World Series by a 4-3 margin as Cincinnati wins the title.
29 October 1975 - Sensational Red Sox rookie outfielder Fred Lynn is overwhelmingly selected as the American League Rookie of the Year by the baseball writers. Lynn finishes just a half-vote shy of being the unanimous choice as one writer gives teammate Jim Rice a half-vote for first place.
26 November 1975 - Fred Lynn becomes the first ballplayer to win Most Valuable Player honors in the same season that he wins Rookie of the Year. The Red Sox outfielder receives 22 of 24 first-place votes.
