Lyle notches 141 saves and the 1977 Cy Young Award over the next seven seasons for the Bronx Bombers while Cater, brought in to replace power-hitting first baseman George Scott, hits .237 and only eight home runs in his first season and becomes a benchwarmer for his last two years with Boston.
16 September 1972 - Dwight Evans makes his major league debut, replacing Reggie Smith in right field at Fenway Park, and goes hitless in his one at-bat as the Red Sox clobber the Indians, 10-0.
2 October 1972 - Needing to win two-of-three in Detroit, Boston loses the first game 4-1 in part to a costly base running mishap; the Red Sox lose the next day and finish a half-game out of first place behind the Tigers.
21 November 1972 - Rookie catcher Carlton Fisk wins American League Rookie of the Year honors. The Red Sox backstop is the first unanimous selection in voting history.
