Memorable Moments for Jon Lester

  • 16 February 2004 - After the Red Sox are unable to complete a trade with the Rangers within a 72-hour window, Texas trades Alex Rodriguez along with cash to the New York Yankees in exchange for Alfonso Soriano and a player to be named later, Joaquin Arias. The players' association had objected to the terms that would have restructured the contract of the reigning American League MVP. The trade would have also sent Manny Ramirez and prospect Jon Lester to the Rangers and Nomar Garciaparra to the White Sox in exchange for Magglio Ordonez.
  • 19 July 2006 - Josh Beckett and Jonathan Papelbon combine for Boston's second consecutive 1-0 shutout over Kansas City, the first time since 1916 that the Red Sox had won back-to-back 1-0 wins at Fenway Park. Rookie pitcher Jon Lester had allowed just one hit in eight innings of work the previous day against the Royals and Papelbon had worked a perfect ninth.
  • 23 July 2007 - Nearly one year after being diagnosed with lymphoma, Jon Lester returns to the mound in Cleveland and goes six full innings to earn the win in his first start since the previous August. After the season, in recognition of his recovery, the southpaw is honored with the 2007 Tony Conigliaro Award.
  • 19 May 2008 - Jon Lester becomes the second Red Sox pitcher in eight months to hurl a no-hitter, striking out nine and yielding just two walks in a 7-0 win over Kansas City at Fenway Park.
  • 21 January 2009 - Southpaw Jon Lester, who overcame anaplastic large cell lymphoma to pitch Game Four of the 2007 World Series and hurl a no-hitter in May 2008, wins the Hutch Award, and the first to be treated by a doctor from the renowned institution named for Seattle baseball legend Fred Hutchinson.
  • 6 June 2009 - With one out in the top of the seventh at Fenway Park, Texas third baseman Michael Young's double breaks up a perfect game being thrown by Boston southpaw Jon Lester, who settles for a complete game two-hitter and an 8-1 win for Boston. The gem comes just over a year after Lester had no-hit the Kansas City Royals.
  • 6 September 2009 - Jon Lester becomes the tenth Boston pitcher in franchise history to record 200 strikeouts in a single season as the Red Sox win 6-1 over the White Sox. Lester joins Bruce Hurst as the only southpaws to reach this mark with the team.
  • 22 July 2012 - Jon Lester allows 11 earned runs over four-plus innings in a 15-7 loss to the Blue Jays at Fenway Park. The last Red Sox pitcher to allow 11 runs in a game was Doug Bird in 1983.
  • 10 May 2013 - A double by Maicer Izturis with two outs in the sixth is the only blemish in Red Sox southpaw Jon Lester's line score as he pitches a complete game one-hitter and shuts out the Blue Jays 5-0 at Fenway Park.
  • 20 September 2013 - The Red Sox capture the American League East title with a 6-3 win over the Blue Jays at Fenway Park. Jon Lester wins his 100th career game as Boston, whom most preseason pundits had picked to finish fourth or fifth in its division, wins the East for the first time since 2007.
  • 23 October 2013 - The Red Sox win Game One of the World Series 8-1 over St. Louis at Fenway Park. Jon Lester blanks the Cardinals over 7-2/3 innings of work, while Mike Napoli provides all the necessary offense in the first with a bases-clearing double to the gap in left-center field.
  • 28 October 2013 - Jon Lester allows just four hits over 7-2/3 innings of work as the Red Sox win Game Five of the World Series 3-1 over the Cardinals at Busch Stadium to take a 3-2 series lead. Koji Uehara retires the last four batters to earn his seventh save of the postseason. With a hit in the fourth inning, David Ortiz ties a World Series record by reaching base in nine consecutive plate appearances.
  • 31 July 2014 - Well out of contention, the Red Sox trade away several pieces of last year's World Series championship team, including Jon Lester and Jonny Gomes to the Athletics, John Lackey to the Cardinals, Andrew Miller to the Orioles, and Stephen Drew to the Yankees. Drew's trade for utilityman Kelly Johnson marks the first trade between Boston and New York since 1997. Boston also receives two-time All-Star Home Run Derby winner Yoenis Cespedes from Oakland.
