CITGO Sign

Just over the left field wall and perched in Kenmore Square across I-90 is the infamous and majestic CITGO sign, which has stood high above the street since 1965. With the Monster Seats in place, you don’t get the clear view fans used to enjoy of the original pulsing neon sign with the “trimark” company logo whenever a player hit a towering home run over the Green Monster.

The sign was almost removed by the company in 1983 but, in response to public outcry over plans to dismantle what many considered urban art, the sign was refurbished. Following the 2004 season, the sign underwent another restoration project and the nearly 6,000 glass tubes were replaced with thousands of light-emitting diodes (LEDs), which now makes the sign more energy-efficient as well as easier to maintain.
